Stephanie's Story

"I was a foster kid who started using drugs at 16. By the time I was in Reno, I had lost my children to CPS and spiraled into addiction," recalls Stephanie Myers.

Her journey to recovery wasn’t linear. Years of battling opiate addiction, surviving a life-threatening overdose, and turning to alcohol left her at rock bottom. In jail and separated from her 8-month-old daughter, Stephanie experienced a moment of reckoning: "That broke me in a way nothing else had."

In 2023, Stephanie sought refuge at a women’s homeless shelter and found something she’d never experienced: compassion. "For the first time, I was treated like a human, like I was worth more than my circumstances. That changed everything," she shares.

Determined to rebuild her life, Stephanie joined the GRIT Recovery Program in Reno, NV, where she tackled her trauma, walked miles to recovery appointments, and worked tirelessly to regain custody of her daughter. Through GRIT, she found structure, support, and hope for a brighter future.

With nearly a year of sobriety, Stephanie works at the shelter that once saved her. She also advocates for the GRIT Recovery Program, sharing her story to inspire others.

"I tell these women, ‘You can do it too. Start where you are and do your best.’ Compassion saved me, and now I get to pay it forward."

Jorge's Story

From Sleeping on Concrete to Guiding Others: Jorge’s Journey with the Karma Box Project

“I used to sleep on a concrete slab in front of a furniture shop on 4th Street. It was the safest spot I could find—fully lit, where people could see me. That’s how I made it through the night.”

Jorge, now a Site Navigator at Safe Camp with the Karma Box Project, knows firsthand what it’s like to have nothing but the cold ground to sleep on. His journey is one of resilience, recovery, and ultimately, redemption.

Originally from Cuba, Jorge came to the United States with his family in 1967 at just seven years old. Life took him from the East Coast to Las Vegas, where a business venture turned into a fast-paced lifestyle that eventually led to substance abuse—and a prison sentence that lasted decades.

“When I got out, I didn’t want to go back to my family. I wanted to try and start fresh out here. But I ended up homeless... and back on drugs.”

It took months of hardship before Jorge entered a shelter and began his recovery journey. With help from county programs and workforce services, he secured housing and a job. But when the company he worked for relocated out of state, Jorge was faced with a familiar uncertainty.

He found himself walking the river trail downtown—reflecting, trying to clear his head. That’s when he spotted a Karma Box sign. Curious, he looked into it, learned more, and reached out.

That step changed everything.

Today, Jorge serves as a guiding presence for others who are navigating homelessness. As a Site Navigator, he offers not just direction—but understanding, compassion, and hope.

“I love this job. I get to give back what was given to me.”

From battling walking pneumonia in freezing weather to becoming a steady, trusted face at Safe Camp, Jorge’s story is proof that people can rebuild—and that second chances matter.

We’re lucky to have Jorge on our team, and the community is stronger because of him.

Kevin's Story

From Struggles to Strength: Kevin's Journey of Transformation

Meet Kevin, the Cares Campus Outreach Coordinator, whose journey from hardship to hope inspires those he serves.

“I started out at the age of 13,” Kevin shares, reflecting on a rough childhood and years spent on the streets. “I didn’t want to be in that lifestyle anymore. I didn’t want to go to jail again.” Determined to change, he worked hard to break free but faced challenges, including addiction and relapse.

During tough times, Kevin relied on Karma Boxes for survival. “Every time I went to one, I thought of Grant,” he recalls. A chance encounter with a commercial featuring Grant Denton, founder of the Karma Box Project, motivated Kevin to reach out. “I hit him up for a job when I got out. Sure enough, I got hired and have been doing good ever since.”

Now, Kevin channels his experiences into helping others.

“My specialty is getting people into rehabs and programs. It’s fun, and it reminds me of where I came from and what I don’t want to go back to.” Kevin’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of giving back, proving that transformation is always possible with the right support.

August's Story

August, Outreach Supervisor for the Karma Box Project, knows the streets of Reno intimately—not just as a local, but as someone who once called them home.

“I grew up here,” August shares. “I was homeless on these streets when I was 19. I went to prison for 30 years after protecting a friend in a situation that led to someone’s death. While I was there, I got an education and helped others change the way they thought.”

Now, August channels that hard-earned wisdom into helping those who face the struggles he once endured. “I go out and find people in tents, in the bushes. I help them get their EBT cards, licenses, social security cards—and, hopefully, housing. Honestly, I’m a PR person. I show them we can be trusted, that we’re there to help, not harm.”

August’s path to the Karma Box Project came unexpectedly. “I tried working for a different organization, but my background held me back. That’s when I was told to check out Karma Box. I ran into the COO at the time, Brent, talked to him for 45 minutes, and he said, ‘I’ve got a job for you.’”

Today, August is a beacon of hope for those navigating homelessness in Reno. His unique ability to build trust and advocate for others stems from his experiences. “Karma Box wasn’t in my plans,” he admits. “But now it’s my purpose.”
